Simpleman Cruise 2009 PDF Print E-mail

Hi All,
Well, where do I start? Ok….how about at the pre-cruise party we had on

Wednesday night before the cruise at our very gracious hosts Patty and

Wolf Heuberger’s house….(we're already planning one for next year, hey

Wolf, does Patty know?) We had a blast hanging and jamming with some

of our friends we have made like Mr. Richard Pierce and Rambler Sam.

both from the kick ass band Rambler -- from right down here in Ft. Lauderdale Fla! Yes'm, it is sunny and beautiful down here right now. Sorry all, I had to go there! lol..... We also had Mr. Bobby Chet Cook and family with us, an amazing guitar player all of 14 years old and a good friend of ours. Miss Layla Southern (what a singer) and family were also here. Great people looking forward to seeing all of them again soon. Anyway, lets get back to it. How do you follow that good of a time? Well, you go the next afternoon on the Lynyrd Skynyrd Simple Man 09 Cruise on the Carnival ship Destiny, that's how!

From the moment we got on the boat it was a party. Hell, even the life boat drill was a riot! We were up on deck for -- oh about 38 seconds and we were saying hello to an old friend of Wolfgang's by the name of Dave Hlubek -- yup Mr. Molly Hatchet. He was very gracious and even remembered the good old days jamming down here in Ft. Liquordale with us. The Molly Hatchet boys were very cool staying out and about on board the ship for most of the four days. And I thought my wife was a shy one, but she got almost all of Hatchet’s autographs on her sneakers. Is there no shame? I wonder what I could get for them on Ebay…Ha Ha! Those boys rocked all their shows and they were great. Even pulled out “The Creeper” at their outside show. Now there’s one you don't hear too often. The boat was rockin’ from bow to stern all four days with the Marshall Tucker Band -- man Chris Hicks and Clay Cook were bringing it as usual. The big shows on Friday and Saturday nights with Skynyrd and .38 Special were awesome! Skynyrd does a kind of unplugged show on Sunday afternoon also, which is real cool and shows a whole other side of the band you don't normally see.

There were many other great bands on board, I think about 16 maybe 17. Far too many to mention, although Heather Luttrel, Franciso Vidal, Hello Dave and Leslie were great as usual and, of course, I have to mention Blackberry Smoke out of Atlanta, Ga., I believe. Wow, those boys are a hell of a lot of fun to watch and can bring some life out of just about anyone! If I am not mistaken and I sure as hell could be, Marshall Tucker played for over three and a half hours on Saturday night out on the Lido deck with numerous people coming up and jamming with them like Sparky from Skynyrd, Shawn Beamer and Dave Hlubek from Molly Hatchet. It really was something to see.

Oh yeah, now I remember….we did make a stop somewhere. It was in the Bahamas at Half Moon Cay (Little San Salvador Island to be exact) darn, we had to take another boat over to that island and hang out with friends new and old on the beach for the afternoon, a couple of cool beverages perhaps to keep our sea legs -- you know how it is. Beautiful spot to stop at and many things to do, but only if you want to.

Now this is the way to start off the New Year! Can I get a Hell Yeah? Thank you! We did have to head back to Miami some time I guess, although I'm sure I wouldn’t be alone in saying just one more day out there at sea PLEASE! Alright fine, we have to go back but I believe it is official unless things change there will be a Simple Man Cruise 2010 and we can only hope that most of the bands that were on board this year come back for another round! Check in to The Southern Rock Society page for updates that will probably start in March or April and we will do our best to keep you all informed. I will say this…..if you can swing it, it is well worth going. You will see things and have the opportunity to meet people you just don't normally get. For all you Southern Rock Fans out there let's all meet on the boat next January and Kick It One Time! My hats off to Lynyrd Skynyrd and all the great bands on board, Sixthman Andy and all of the staff. Another awesome job and the Carnival Cruise Line is amazing. I cannot believe how much beer those ships can hold. lol..... Thanks very much ya'll for taking a moment to read this. Take Care!

For now this is Larry from the Southern Rock Society on behalf of everyone that was on the cruise -- thank you and SEA you next time!
